Fighting for Common Sense
Fighting for Common Sense
In the middle of the night on Friday, Speaker Pelosi pushed through the first part of her multi-trillion dollar tax and spending spree. The first part only directs a fraction of its topline number for real infrastructure and was paired together with President Biden's massive reconciliation plan, which we don't even know how expensive it is yet. I signed a letter sent to Democratic Leadership this week to delay any vote until the Congressional Budget Office can score it. It is unacceptable that Speaker Pelosi would try to force through the largest spending package in history without any full understanding of the cost, or frankly, what is even in it. Inflation continues to soar and this type of reckless spending is unsustainable and will only add fuel to the fire.
Opposing Rigid Vaccine Mandate
The Biden administration's vaccine mandate is a serious overreach that will inflict further harm on an already hobbled economy. In the middle of a nationwide labor shortage, this heavy-handed mandate will place more undue burdens on job creators, cause more workers to lose their livelihoods, and escalate the supply chain crisis. It couldn't come at a worse time as we approach the holiday season. The decision to get vaccinated should be between you and your doctor, not you and the government. I spoke at a press conference Friday to share stories from constituents about how the rigid OSHA and CMS rules will impact their families and communities.
Protecting Michigan's Energy Infrastructure
In an Energy Subcommittee hearing in May, I asked Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm if the Administration was considering shutting down Line 5 and she indicated it is not within their scope. However, this week, reports surfaced the Biden Administration is indeed exploring shutting down the pipeline. Every family in Michigan and throughout the Midwest should be deeply troubled by this news. Halting operations of this energy pipeline would hurt our economy and cause home heating costs to rise even higher right as we enter the winter months. In response to these reports, I led a letter to President Biden outlining the disaster this would cause to Michiganders, and the citizens of other states in the Midwest.
Preventing Massive Payments to Illegal Immigrants
Recent reports from indicate President Biden's Administration is considering providing settlement payments up to $450,000 to certain illegal immigrants who unlawfully crossed our southern border. This proposal is pure madness and will only incentivize further illegal crossings. For context, if a United States service member is killed in the line of duty, their next-of-kin may receive a payment up to $400,000. This week, I cosponsored legislation which would prevent Biden's Department of Justice from making these massive payments.
