Empowering Workers

I recently had the opportunity to visit Rosalie's Roadhouse in Jonesville and hear more from workers who are excited about the benefits of the Working Families Tax Cuts. This historic legislation supports workers through policies like no tax on tips and overtime, which will boost the income of tipped and hourly workers by up to $1,400. This tax season, nearly 20 million taxpayers have already claimed no tax on overtime, helping them keep more of their hard-earned money. Furthermore, as a result of this historic legislation, this open filing tax season will be the largest refund season for Michigan families. Americans will receive an additional $91 billion in tax refunds.

Protecting Our Great Lakes Fisheries

Great Lakes fisheries are essential to Michigan's economy, outdoor recreation, and cultural heritage. In the Great Lakes, cormorant populations have wreaked havoc on fish stocks, inflicting millions of dollars in damage to the Great Lakes fisheries. On Thursday, I introduced the Responsible Cormorant Management and Control Act to ensure effective, science‑based management of double‑crested cormorant populations across the United States. This legislation would establish a comprehensive framework to ensure that population management is effective and sustainable, better protecting fisheries and other wildlife habitats.

Honoring a Jackson Coach on a Legendary Feat

I recently took to the House floor to recognize Nathan Martin, a dedicated cross-country coach and substitute teacher at Jackson High School, who has earned national recognition by winning the 41st Los Angeles Marathon within the very last second of the race. However, Nathan’s impact extends far beyond his own personal achievement. As a coach and substitute teacher, he inspires young runners and students, teaching them the values of discipline, resilience, and believing in themselves. His remarkable victory is a win for the entire Jackson community and for every student he has encouraged along the way.

Making Housing More Affordable

I enjoyed meeting with the Southwestern Michigan Association of Realtors to discuss recent legislation to incentivize homeownership. I was proud to vote for the bipartisan Housing for the 21st Century Act, which cuts red tape, modernizes outdated HUD programs, and unlocks capital to expand housing. These bipartisan solutions will expand supply, lower costs, and provide families with more options. We must remove regulatory barriers to lower housing costs and ensure that hardworking Michiganders can achieve their own American Dream. I also recently supported the Working Families Tax Cuts legislation that provides certainty and financial relief for hardworking Michiganders. The historic legislation expands Opportunity Zones in economically disadvantaged communities to spur development and reinstates the Mortgage Insurance Premium tax deduction to save first-time homebuyers thousands of dollars a year on their taxes.
