Defending the Constitution

Defending the Constitution

Along with Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), I reintroduced the Fifth Amendment Integrity Restoration Act (FAIR Act), a series of sweeping reforms to our nation's civil asset forfeiture laws. The bipartisan FAIR Act, H.R. 2857, will raise the level of proof necessary for the federal government to seize property, reform the IRS structuring statute to protect innocent small business owners, and increase transparency and congressional oversight. For too long, it has been too easy for the government to seize a citizen's private property without even bringing charges. Over the years, I have worked to generate bipartisan support for this important legislation and remain committed to seeing this bill become law.

Increasing Access to Broadband

As a member of the Communications and Technology Subcommittee, I have been working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to promote policies that increase access to broadband. In a few weeks a new initiative, the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) Program, will officially launch to help struggling Americans afford high-speed internet. For more information about the program, including eligibility requirements, please visit: https://www.fcc.gov/broadbandbenefit .

As of May 12, 2021, eligible households will be able to enroll in the program and receive a monthly discount off the cost of broadband service from an approved provider. Eligible households can enroll through an approved provider or by visiting https://getemergencybroadband.org.

Ongoing Border Crisis

Recently, I joined colleagues on the Energy and Commerce Committee to send a letter to Vice President Harris requesting information on the current situation at the southern border. This letter had questions regarding capacity issues, staffing and training requirements, allegations of neglect and abuse, as well as COVID-19 protocols. What is happening at the border is unacceptable and action is long overdue. To read the full letter, please click here.

Addressing Motorcycle Profiling

Across this country, and in Michigan in particular, we have a passionate riding community, which I proudly am a member. The start of spring means a growing number of riders in Michigan are out enjoying the open road and the benefits motorcycles bring. As I attend ABATE meetings, and hear from other motorcyclists, many express concern about motorcycle profiling. Working with my colleagues in a bipartisan fashion, we have introduced a resolution highlighting motorcycle profiling and promoting collaboration between the motorcycle and law enforcement communities.

Today also marks the first day of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, which serves as an important opportunity to remind car and truck drivers to always be on the lookout for nearby motorcycle riders and to educate motorcyclists on safe operating procedures.

President Biden Speech Reaction

Unfortunately, President Biden's early actions in office speak louder than his words in this week's address to a joint session of Congress. In his first 100 days, the President has catered to the far-left wing of his party. He's ignored the humanitarian crisis at the southern border, jeopardized American jobs and energy independence, pushed for higher taxes, and proposed a mind-boggling amount of government spending. Although the President has embarked on a highly partisan course, it is not too late to right the ship and demonstrate a willingness to reach across the aisle.
