Through my work on the Energy and Commerce Committee, I have been focused on bringing next-generation connectivity to rural communities. To bring technologies like lightning-fast broadband networks to reality, we need a highly-skilled, professional workforce that is equipped to deploy them. This week, along with Congresswoman Yvette Clarke (D-NY), I introduced the TOWER Infrastructure Deployment Act, which will help close the workforce shortage in the telecommunications industry.

It was great to join Google for a "Grow with Google" event at the Jackson District Library. The event provided a series of free workshops to help job seekers and small businesses learn digital skills. Having access to these types of learning opportunities will help meet Michigan's changing workforce needs and keep our state competitive for years to come.

What an exciting moment it was to break ground on the first Fisher House facility in Michigan at the Ann Arbor VA. Once built, this first-class facility will provide temporary housing for military families while a veteran is receiving care at the VA. A special thank you to everyone who helped make this day possible.

It was an honor to present WLEN Radio, led by Julie Koehn, with the National Service to Community Award this week at a ceremony in Washington, DC. WLEN received this prestigious award for its annual "Thank a Vet" event, which raises money to help local veterans. For all of us who call Lenawee County home, we're grateful for WLEN's commitment to giving back to the community.

2019 Service Academy Appointments

Eight students from Michigan's 7th District have received an appointment to attend a U.S. military service academy in the fall of 2019. Receiving an appointment to a military academy is an incredible honor, and these students have all proven themselves through their work ethic, strong character, and academic achievements. As Americans, we are indebted to these young men and women for choosing a path of service.
