Bolstering Election Integrity

Last week, a review by Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson revealed that at least 15 non-citizens were found to have illegally cast a ballot in Michigan's 2024 elections. In response, I partnered with members of the Michigan Republican Delegation to send a letter to Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson calling on her to answer questions about this report and the security of Michigan elections. This week, House Republicans also took action by passing the SAVE Act to ensure that only U.S. citizens are voting in our federal elections. The SAVE Act would require states to verify U.S. citizenship when registering an individual to vote in federal elections and provide states with the tools to remove non-citizens from their voter rolls. We must ensure that our elections are secure and prevent non-citizens from abusing our democratic process.

Protecting Kids

On Wednesday, the House Committee on Education and Workforce held a markup and voted to advance my bill, the PROTECT Kids Act. The PROTECT Kids Act would safeguard parental rights by requiring that any federally funded elementary or middle school seek and acquire parental consent before changing their child’s pronouns, gender markers, or preferred name on any school form. This also includes allowing a child to change their sex-based accommodations, such as locker rooms or bathrooms. This is a crucial step in fighting to increase transparency and defend the rights of parents.

Preserving Michigan's Interests

This week, I participated in multiple committee hearings. As Chairman of the Education and Workforce Committee, I was able to attend a Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittee hearing to examine how we can protect opportunities for student athletes. I also had a chance to discuss the current state of college athletics, protecting the State of Michigan's college athletic competitiveness, and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) guidelines with University of Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel and Michigan State University Athletic Director Alan Haller. Furthermore, as a member of the Natural Resources Committee, I had the opportunity to participate in a hearing to discuss legislation that would help preserve wildlife habitats and fisheries within the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes are a vital resource to Michiganders that we must protect for generations to come.

Supporting our Veterans

Veterans are a treasure that our nation must honor and care for. This week, the House passed 7 bills to uphold our commitment to our nation's heroic veterans including:

  • Prioritizing Veterans' Survivors Act
  • VETT Act
  • Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserves Tuition Fairness Act
  • Vietnam Veterans Liver Fluke Cancer Study Act
  • Clear Communication for Veterans Claims Act
  • Deliver for Veterans Act
  • Fairness for Servicemembers and their Families Act

We owe a debt of gratitude to our nation’s veterans who have sacrificed so much for our country, and you can be sure I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure they have the proper support.

Final Reminder: Congressional Art Competition

The last day for my office to accept applications from high school students in Michigan's 5th District to participate in the Congressional Art Competition will be April 18, 2025, at midnight. The winning piece of artwork will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel to the U.S. Capitol, along with the winners from other congressional districts across the country.
