Addressing the Canadian Wildfires
For the past few years, Canadian wildfire smoke has posed a threat to our state and Michigan residents, especially those who are sensitive to air pollutants or those with underlying health conditions. Wildfires are a challenge both our countries share, which has been largely driven by decades of inadequate forest management that allowed hazardous fuels to accumulate, leading to larger and more devastating fires. That is why, this past year, we passed legislation like the bipartisan Fix Our Forests Act to increase resilience to catastrophic wildfires, promote collaboration across state and federal agencies, restore forest health, and encourage more active forest management. Canada must take similar mitigation measures immediately.
After conversations with Ambassador Hoekstra and other officials, I led members of the Michigan Republican Delegation in sending a letter to the Ambassador of Canada to the United States demanding a meeting to discuss steps that can be taken to address the wildfires plaguing both of our countries, the progress being made in Canada on wildfire containment, prevention, and forest management, and how the U.S. can assist in providing active solutions to benefit Canadians and our constituents.
Empowering Farmers with Deputy Secretary Vaden
America's farmers are committed to producing the most abundant food supply in the world, and we must ensure they have the resources to do so. I had the opportunity to host Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Stephen Vaden for a tour of Leitz Farms in Sodus and for a roundtable at Weir Farms in Horton with farmers from across five counties. During the visit, we discussed how provisions in the Working Families Tax Cuts and this year's Farm Bill, such as the elimination of the Death Tax, strengthened risk management tools, and expanded market access, all help enhance farmers' ability to continue growing our nation's food supply. I remain committed to working with the administration on further efforts to support rural development and lower costs for farmers.
Putting Students First
As Chairman of the Education and Workforce Committee, I am committed to ensuring our education system empowers students, families, and workers. This week, the Education and Workforce Committee held a markup of ten bills intended to improve education outcomes by ensuring our education system is responsive to local communities. These ten bills advance that mission by transferring key statutory authorities to agencies better equipped to carry them out. By reducing unnecessary bureaucracy, we can better connect education with workforce training programs, providing students with the skills they need to succeed.
Supporting Our Veterans with Secretary Collins
This July, our nation is celebrating 250 years because of the sacrifices our heroic veterans have made to defend our freedoms, and we must ensure they receive the care and resources they deserve. Recently, I joined U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins to meet with local veterans in Michigan and discuss the Trump administration's ongoing efforts to improve VA services. During the visit, we spoke with health care staff and leaders from Michigan's veterans' groups and discussed steps to increase support services and ensure proper access to the care they need.
Protecting Constitutional Rights
Our Second Amendment freedoms are fundamental and must be protected for all Americans. However, too often, law-abiding citizens are targeted by financial services companies that are pressured by the government to compile data on individuals who lawfully purchase firearms, deterring citizens from exercising their Constitutional rights. This week, I voted for, and the House passed, the Privacy in Purchases Act, which prevents this breach of privacy and strengthens Second Amendment protections by banning the use of a Merchant Category Code to track gun sales at stores. I am proud to support this important legislation that defends Michiganders' Constitutional right to bear arms.
Lowering Housing Costs
Access to affordable housing is essential to retaining the full promise of the American Dream. Recently, the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act became law, marking a significant milestone toward restoring housing affordability. This legislation cuts burdensome regulations and increases housing supply, paving a path to homeownership for hardworking Americans. I am proud to have supported legislation that helps lower costs for Michigan families.
