Addressing Baby Formula Shortage

Addressing Baby Formula Shortage

We are facing a nationwide baby formula shortage that is making many parents scramble and worry about feeding their babies. This week, I signed a letter pressing President Biden and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Robert Califf for answers to end this shortage. We asked questions on increasing production and supply, identifying stopgap solutions, and examining the temporary government closure of a facility in Sturgis, Michigan, which produces a significant supply of formula for the entire nation. This is an ongoing crisis that needs to be addressed immediately. If you would like to read the full letter, please click here.

Protecting the Great Lakes

Recently, I introduced the bipartisan Great Lakes Agricultural Stewardship Act with Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) in a continued effort to preserve the long-term health of the Great Lakes. This bipartisan legislation would ensure Great Lakes states that administer voluntary assurance programs have access to federal resources to better mitigate agricultural pollution risks, like harmful algae blooms on Lake Erie. These programs, including Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP), support farmers in their work to implement conservation best practices and reduce hazards, such as runoff and erosion.

Seeking Energy Solutions

The energy crisis continues to spiral out of control as gas prices are reaching record highs. This week, instead of focusing on expanding domestic energy production, the Energy Subcommittee held a hearing on hydropower. While I am a supporter of hydro, American citizens are hurting and the subcommittee should be focused on policy to provide quick relief. One step we can take immediately is pass the American Energy Independence from Russia Act, which would unleash domestic production and help bring down these sky-high costs.

Defending Religious Liberty

Religious liberty is foundational to America. It is enshrined as the First Amendment to our Constitution. It is appalling that Speaker Pelosi pushed through legislation this week, the Community Service Block Grant Modernization Act, that cuts current law protections for faith-based organizations who are dedicated to serving those in need. I offered an amendment to uphold religious liberty and restore these longstanding protections for faith-based organizations. Unfortunately, this amendment based on First Amendment protections was rejected by the Democratic majority.

Recognizing Police Week

This is National Police Week, and I want to give a heartfelt thank you to all the men and women who serve and protect our communities. We are so grateful for the sacrifices you are willing to make each day. I’m proud to always back the blue.
