Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, President Obama signed into law Congressman Tim Walberg's (MI-07) bipartisan bill to increase government accountability and reduce wasteful spending. The Grants Oversight and New Efficiency (GONE) Act, introduced along with Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence (MI-14) in the House, requires federal agencies to take action to identify thousands of expired grant accounts with a zero balance that should be closed out.
Seats filled quickly as constituents filed in to discuss current issues with Walberg and to hear an update on recent workings at the national level.
Walberg touched basis on the affordable care act, noting recent legislation put into place to combat a tax surrounding new technological devices in the medical field.
Rep. Walberg, R- Tipton, spoke Tuesday at a legislative luncheon hosted by the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce at the Monroe Golf & Country Club.
"The final year of Obama looks to be a challenging year," he said. "He has not matriculated to be a coalition- building president."
He took some time to recap the accomplishments of Congress during its last few weeks of 2015.
In recent years, we have witnessed the increasing pain and suffering inflicted by heroin and opioid addiction in communities in our districts and across the country. We, like many of our constituents, have seen firsthand how this tragic epidemic has affected our own friends and loved ones, and by sharing their stories we hope to put a face to the addiction crisis.
The statistics surrounding drug addiction and overdose are truly staggering.
Walberg said, "Unfortunately, the President missed that opportunity, taking the usual go-it-alone approach and describing many of the same outdated policies we've heard so many times before."
