Walberg: Restore Local Control in Education

July 8, 2015

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) voted today to improve K-12 education by replacing the unworkable mandates and overreach created by No Child Left Behind. H.R. 5, the Student Success Act, will reduce the federal footprint in education, empower parents and teachers at the local level, and prevent the Secretary of Education from coercing states into adopting Common Core or any other common standards.

"Far too many children are paying the price for top-down policies and increasing federal intrusion in the classroom. Getting Washington out of the way and returning decision-making to the local level will empower the parents, teachers, and administrators who know their students best. These long overdue reforms will help open up opportunities regardless of a child's zip code and put them on a path to success in school and in life," said Walberg.

Congressman Walberg serves on the House Education and the Workforce Committee as Chair of the Workforce Protections Subcommittee. In addition, he serves on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. For more information on Walberg's work in Congress visit walberg.house.gov.
