One Big, Beautiful Bill
On Thursday, House Republicans passed historic legislation to deliver relief to the American people. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act would restore fiscal responsibility, make vital investments in our communities, and prevent the largest tax hike in American history by permanently extending the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017. The TCJA unleashed unprecedented job growth and higher wages for hardworking families. Two years after being signed into law, real median household income increased by $5,000 and real wages rose by 4.9%, allowing families to pocket more of their hard-earned money. The reforms incentivized businesses to invest more in the US, creating jobs and economic growth. This bill represents a generational opportunity to make these vital tax cuts permanent to support families, workers, and small businesses. I joined Speaker Johnson and the rest of the House leadership team at a press conference after the passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill to discuss how this vital legislation will help hardworking families, revitalize our economy, and usher in the new Golden Age of America. Impact on Southern MichiganMichigan's 5th Congressional District is home to 416,620 taxpayers. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act would prevent the average taxpayer in the district from facing a 27% tax hike. This means that if the Trump tax cuts were to expire, a family of 4 making $65,437, the median income of MI-05, would see a $1,240 tax increase, which equates to about 6 weeks' worth of groceries. The expiration of these critical provisions would also cut the Child Tax Credit in half for 66,780 MI-05 families. The One Big, Beautiful Bill also ensures that an estimated 33,380 small businesses in MI-05 wouldn't be hit with a 43.4% tax rate, creating uncertainty for business owners and their workers. By making the tax cuts permanent for these hardworking families and mom-and-pop shops, we can provide relief and reinvigorate our economy.

Student Success and Taxpayer Savings PlanAs Chairman of the Education and Workforce Committee, I helped usher through the Student Success and Taxpayers Savings Act, which was part of the final package. After the House and Senate agreed to a budget resolution, the Education and Workforce Committee was instructed to identify at least $330 billion in savings. Our plan exceeds this goal and is estimated to produce $349.1 billion in savings by bringing much-needed reform in three areas: simplified loan repayment, streamlined student loan options, and accountability for students and taxpayers. It also includes other reforms that will lower costs for students and families while ensuring the fiscal sustainability of targeted programs like the Pell Grant.

Testifying Before the Rules CommitteeAs part of the legislative process, bills generally will need to go before the House Committee on Rules to determine the rules under which the bill will be considered by the House before reaching the floor for a vote. As Chairman of the Education and Workforce Committee, I was called upon to testify before the Rules Committee about the provisions in the bill from the Student Success and Taxpayers Savings Act, along with the chairs of the other committees who were instructed to participate in the reconciliation process.

More Relief for Hardworking Americans The One Big Beautiful Bill Act serves as the legislative vehicle for many of President Trump's priorities. While saving $1.6 trillion, the bill also contains provisions to secure our border, revolutionize our national security, unleash American energy dominance, and secure Medicaid for those who are most vulnerable. Furthermore, the bill includes policies like "no tax on tips" and "no tax on overtime" to support our nation's workers and ensure they can pocket more of their hard-earned money.
