On Tuesday, I met with Branch County Sheriff Fred Blankenship to discuss the important work the department does to protect our community, as well as my recent efforts in Congress to support our law enforcement. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act was signed into law by President Trump on Independence Day and establishes no tax on overtime pay. Due to the nature of their profession, those in law enforcement are often required to work long hours and on holidays to respond to emergencies and keep our communities safe. The no tax on overtime provision allows these brave men and women to keep more of their hard-earned money, compensating them for their sacrifices.

According to data released by the National Human Trafficking Hotline, in Michigan, 254 cases of human trafficking were identified in 2023 alone, with 506 victims involved. To address this scourge on our society, I have introduced the Enhancing Detection of Human Trafficking Act with Rep. Lucy McBath (D-GA). This bipartisan, bicameral legislation would ensure that Department of Labor employees receive the proper training to effectively recognize instances of human trafficking and respond to these acts of modern-day slavery.

Meeting with Glen Oaks

This week, I had the pleasure of meeting the new president of Glen Oaks Community College, Dr. Bryan Newton, and learning about his vision for the future of the college. As Chairman of the Education and Workforce Committee, I understand how vital community colleges like Glen Oaks are to ensuring that we have an educated workforce that meets the needs of today's employers. It was inspiring to see the work they are doing to educate the next generation of leaders.

On Thursday, I partnered with my fellow chairmen of the Energy and Commerce and Judiciary Committees to introduce the Student Compensation and Opportunity through Rights and Endorsements (SCORE) Act. The SCORE Act would empower student-athletes by establishing clear federal standards and legal protections for those who enter into Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) agreements and hire agents. The bill would also improve transparency and accountability to better protect athletes and universities and prioritize academic and health support. This landmark legislation would support student-athletes and recenter the educational mission of college athletics.

As an avid motorcycle rider, I enjoyed spending Independence Day Weekend at the 52nd annual RedBud National in Buchanan and serving as the Grand Marshal with motocross racer Jeff Stanton. Thank you for having me!
