Cracking Down on Fraud

Cracking Down on Fraud
In states like Minnesota, we've seen fraudsters steal billions, including from our child care assistance programs. Every dollar lost to fraud is a dollar that doesn’t help a working parent care for a child or put food on the table. That's why I ushered the Stop Child Care Scams Act through the Education and Workforce Committee, which then passed the House on Wednesday. The Stop Child Care Scams Act would close loopholes, strengthen oversight and accountability, and protect taxpayer dollars in federal child care assistance programs. We must continue to work to hold fraudsters accountable and ensure taxpayer dollars are supporting hardworking Americans, not criminals exploiting the system.
Preventing Future EV Mandates
In 2024, the Biden-era EPA announced aggressive emissions standards that would force over two-thirds of all new vehicles to be electric. While the Trump administration has eliminated the de facto electric vehicle mandate, we must ensure that the future of the auto industry is determined by innovation, not burdensome mandates that raise costs on Michigan families. On Wednesday, the Subcommittee on the Environment held a legislative hearing on my bill, the Choice in Automobile Retail Sales (CARS) Act, which would provide certainty by preventing the EPA from implementing future vehicle emission regulations that would limit consumer choice. I remain committed to ensuring everyday Americans have access to reliable and affordable vehicles, and I look forward to advancing this legislation in the House.
Empowering Farmers and Rural America
America's farmers and ranchers play a critical role in securing a safe and abundant food supply for our nation. In April, House Republicans passed a historic farm bill to strengthen America's food supply and deliver for rural America. To build on this success, this week, the House passed an appropriations bill that includes commonsense provisions to ensure that American agriculture stays strong, competitive, and secure. This legislation prioritizes farmers by reinforcing the importance of agricultural innovation and delivering targeted investments for agricultural research and rural development loan programs. It also bolsters our national security by protecting American agricultural land from foreign adversaries like China.
Making Washington Work for Southern Michigan
For families in southern Michigan, Washington should be a partner in lowering expenses. While Americans continue to recover from the failed policies of the previous administration, I am committed to lowering costs and rooting out wasteful government spending. As Chairman of the Education and Workforce Committee, I worked with my colleagues to identify savings for taxpayers, and my plan, which was signed into law, saved over $280 billion. While I have worked to root out waste, fraud, and abuse and lower costs for Michigan families, I also recognize the need for federal investments to help address community needs and have secured over $27 million in federal funding for over a dozen projects in Michigan's 5th District. Washington works best when it puts taxpayers first by cutting waste, lowering costs, and investing in the communities that keep our country strong. Read more in my recent op-ed here.
