Walberg Releases PSA Encouraging Action on Drug Take Back Day

October 23, 2019
Press Release

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Tim Walberg today released a public service announcement informing residents of Michigan’s 7th District of an opportunity to participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 26. This service provides a safe and secure means for citizens to dispose of unused and expired medication, as an alternative to other potentially hazardous ways of disposing of prescription drugs.

“The opioid crisis has touched so many of our communities, and each of us can make a difference in fighting back,” said Walberg. “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day raises awareness and encourages the proper disposal of old prescription drugs so they don’t fall into the wrong hands. As a community, we’re thankful for the law enforcement agencies, substance abuse coalitions, and health care organizations that are hosting drop off locations on Saturday and throughout the year.”

As America continues to fight the opioid crisis, proper disposal of prescription drugs is vital. According to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services, many of the abused prescription drugs come from home medicine cabinets. The usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards. At the DEA’s last Take Back Day event in April 2019, Americans turned in over 937,000 pounds of prescription drugs at more than 6,000 sites around the country.
