Update from the road
Showcasing Michigan's Agriculture Community
This week, we welcomed U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue to Michigan to meet with local farmers and producers and showcase our state's agriculture community. We toured MSU's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources to learn more about their research, and then we headed down to Branch County to visit Clemens Food Group and Mastronardi Produce. Click here for more pictures from Secretary Perdue's visit.
Combating the Opioid Epidemic
The opioid epidemic has touched every corner of our state and country, and it will continue to be a top priority to raise awareness and advance bipartisan solutions to respond to this crisis. To collaborate with those on the front lines, I recently held and participated in community forums at Jackson High School, Monroe High School, Saline High School, and Hillsdale College. Thank you to the panelists, students, and community members who joined us and shared their stories and solutions.
Talking Jobs and Skills Education
Strengthening career and technical education was the focus of a panel discussion I hosted at the Jackson County Tower Building. We discussed ways to expand opportunities for more aspiring workers to enter the workforce with the skills they need to compete for in-demand jobs. Thank you to the panelists from the Jackson Area Career Center, Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, Western School District, Elm Plating, and Diversified Engineering & Plastics for sharing your insights.
Coffee Hours Across the District
I recently held coffee hours in Charlotte, Delta Township, Hillsdale, Hudson, and Jackson to discuss the benefits of the new tax cut law, answer questions, and listen to what issues are on people's minds. Thank you to everyone who joined us, and I look forward to continuing to hear from you as I travel to every corner of the district.
Celebrating March is Reading Month
To celebrate March is Reading Month, I had the opportunity to visit Tecumseh South Early Learning Center last week. It was a joy to read to the children and share with them the importance of reading as they grow and advance in school.
