Helping End Surprise Medical Billing

Unexpected medical bills cause a significant amount of financial stress for workers and families, many of whom may not have the funds set aside for this unforeseen expense. This week, the Committee on Education and Labor held a markup for a bill to end surprise billing. The legislation was reported out of committee on a bipartisan vote. Listening to You

Thank you to those who attended our Manchester coffee hour this past week. We had a robust discussion on my recent efforts to expand broadband access, increase government transparency, and protect the Great Lakes. Increasing career and technical education in this economic environment was another topic on the minds of attendees.

Meeting with Community College Leaders

This week, I welcomed leaders from Jackson College, Washtenaw Community College, and Lansing Community College to discuss efforts to boost educational opportunities in our backyard. Increasing short-term Pell grants to boost training opportunities was our main discussion. Community colleges allow the flexibility to adapt curriculum and fill the needs of local opportunities, and with 7 million jobs going unfilled across America, there is a great need to increase training programs.

Creating a More Efficient and Transparent Government

Recently, the Republican Study Committee unveiled the Government Efficiency, Accountability, and Reform (GEAR) Task Force to combat bloated, mismanaged, and inefficient bureaucracy. As a part of this effort, I was invited to highlight my bipartisan Taxpayers Right-to-Know Act, which would increase agency transparency. It recently passed the House by a unanimous vote and now heads to the Senate.
