Protecting the Great Lakes

This week, the House passed legislation to fully fund the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a program that delivers many valuable economic and environmental benefits for Michigan. The legislation also included a bipartisan amendment I worked on with Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI) to help protect the Great Lakes from invasive species like Asian carp. Grass carp, in particular, already have a foothold in Lake Erie, and we need an increased urgency to fight this risk and preserve our coastal wetlands and habitats.

Increasing Government Accountability

The federal workforce is full of hardworking employees, unfortunately bad actors who abuse the public trust are protected by the entrenched bureaucracy instead of held accountable. Under the current system, it’s too hard to remove poorly performing employees, which is why I introduced the Senior Executive Service Accountability Act. It streamlines the process for removing senior level officials for poor performance or misconduct.

Expanding Career and Technical Education

In Congress, I have been a leading champion of expanding career and technical education to help students and workers obtain in-demand skills and good-paying jobs. I recently had the chance to visit and learn more about the Aviation Technology program at Lansing Community College. It's an excellent example of students gaining hands-on experience that can lead to successful careers.

Boosting Michigan Jobs and Manufacturing

I had the opportunity to tour the Dundee Engine Plant this week and visit with the dedicated men and women who work at the facility. Michigan is the heartland of manufacturing and our workers are second to none. We need to continue working to invest in a skilled workforce, create more jobs with better pay, and boost manufacturing here in Michigan.

Better Off Now

Two years ago, House Republicans outlined a positive agenda to tackle some of America's biggest challenges. The result? We're strengthening the military, supporting our veterans, tackling the opioid epidemic, combating human trafficking, and growing jobs and the economy. Much more work remains, but we're focused on helping improve people’s lives and making it easier for families to get ahead. You can learn more at
