Tackling the Opioid Crisis

This week, the House continued our bipartisan work to combat the opioid crisis. Two bipartisan bills I authored with Rep. Debbie Dingell passed unanimously, Jessie's Law and the Safe Disposal of Unused Medication Act. In total, we advanced more than 30 bipartisan bills to enhance treatment and recovery programs, increase prevention efforts, protect communities, and fight the synthetic drug fentanyl. Watch this WLNS report about our work to fight back against addiction in our communities.

Jessie's Law Passes the House

The story of Jessie Grubb, who tragically died of an opioid overdose in Michigan, is one of many reasons the House is taking bipartisan action to combat this crisis. Jessie's Law, which passed the House this week, will help ensure doctors have access to a consenting patient's prior history of addiction in order to make fully informed care and treatment decisions. Click here to learn more about Jessie's Law.

Safely Disposing of Unused Opioids

Many patients receiving hospice care need painkillers to help with end-of-life pain, but any leftover medication can unfortunately end up in the wrong hands. The Safe Disposal of Unused Medication Act, which passed the House by a 398-0 vote, will equip hospice professionals with the ability to safely dispose of unused drugs to help ensure they aren't misused or diverted into the community. Click here to learn more about this bipartisan bill.

2018 Service Academy Appointments

Four students from Michigan’s 7th District have received an appointment to attend a U.S. military service academy in the fall of 2018. These students embody what it means to excel in the classroom, serve their neighbors, and exhibit strong character and leadership qualities. I commend these young men and women for pursuing a path of military service and working hard to receive such a prestigious appointment.

Small Business Optimism Rising

Small business optimism continues to rise to new heights, according to new data released this week by the National Federation of Independent Business. The report cited the positive impacts of pro-growth policies like tax cuts and regulatory relief. In fact, more than 1 million jobs have been created since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act went into law.
