Combating Unwanted Robocalls

This week, along with a bipartisan group of colleagues, I helped introduce the Ending One-Ring Scams Act of 2019. I constantly hear from constituents about the annoyance and prevalence of unwanted robocalls.  These robocalls are not just bothersome, but often lead to scams that incur hidden fees. Our legislation empowers the Department of Justice to stop robocallers from defrauding consumers through malicious one-ring phone call scams.

Banning Taxpayer Dollars to Taliban

After recent news stories reported that the Defense Department requested millions of dollars that could be used to reimburse the Taliban’s travel expenses, I offered an amendment to prohibit any taxpayer money from going directly to the Taliban. After years of vigilantly monitoring how taxpayer funds have been spent in Afghanistan, I was pleased when my colleagues adopted my amendment halting the transfer of any funds to the Taliban. You can watch my remarks on this amendment here.

Protecting Vulnerable Patients

The Medicaid Patient Abuse Prevention Act, another piece of bipartisan legislation I introduced, also passed the House this week. It was incorporated into H.R. 3253, which includes a series of legislative proposals to strengthen the Medicaid program to better serve those in need. My legislation works to stop fraudulent actors who take advantage of Medicaid beneficiaries and hardworking taxpayers.

Curbing Civil Asset Forfeiture Abuse

This productive legislative week also saw the passing of another bipartisan amendment that I offered with Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) aimed at reining in civil asset forfeiture. This amendment takes important steps to halt the practice of adoptive seizures, and it provides critical protections for all Americans and their right to due process under the 5th Amendment of the Constitution.

Recognizing the Hillsdale American Legion

I had the honor of presenting a Congressional Tribute to the Hillsdale American Legion in recognition of their 100th anniversary. Thank you to the American Legion for all of the countless hours of hard work spent in an effort to improve the lives of our veterans, military, and their families.
