Tim Walberg is known throughout south-central Michigan for his commitment to bringing good-paying jobs back to Michigan, restraining government spending, reducing the national deficit and defending traditional values.

A frequent guest on local and state radio and television programs, Congressman Walberg is a principled, independent conservative dedicated to serving his constituents and willing to work in a bi-partisan manner on legislation that benefits the Seventh District.

Walberg is currently in his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives, serving Michigan’s Seventh District, which includes Branch, Eaton, Hillsdale, Jackson and Lenawee counties and parts of Calhoun and Washtenaw counties.

According to a March 11, 2007 Ann Arbor News article, Walberg “dedicated his first few months on Capitol Hill to constituent outreach and legislation on tax reform, worker's rights and Great Lakes preservation.”

Walberg is an original co-sponsor of two pieces of environmental legislation vital to Michigan's future, the International Solid Waste Importation and Management Act (H.R. 518) and the Great Lakes Collaboration Implementation Act (H.R. 1350).

In June 2007, the Congressman introduced the Tax Increase Prevention Act (H.R.2734), legislation that would make permanent tax relief passed in 2001 and 2003. The Congressman's legislation currently has 125 co-sponsors, and the Congressman has written editorials on his bill for The Washington Times, Investor's Business Daily and Human Events.com.

Walberg is outspoken advocate of serious education reform. He would like to see educational decisions made by parents, teachers and local administrators instead of bureaucrats working for the Department of Education. Walberg supports the A-Plus Act, an alternate education policy to No Child Left Behind and wrote about the bill in a January 2008 column in the
Detroit Free Press.

Congressman Walberg serves on the House Agriculture, Education and Labor and House Republican Policy Committees. On the Committee on Agriculture, Walberg serves on the Subcommittee on Conservation, Credit, Energy, and Research and the Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry. On the Education and Labor Subcommittee, Walberg serves on the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, and Pensions and the Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness.

Born in Chicago, Congressman Walberg grew up on the city’s south side and worked briefly as a union steel mill worker before attending Western Illinois University, Moody Bible Institute, Taylor University in Fort Wayne, IN (formerly Fort Wayne Bible College) and Wheaton College Graduate School, earning his B.S. and M.A. degrees.

Previously Congressman Walberg served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1983 to 1999, gaining a reputation as a principled voice for less government spending, lower taxes and fewer regulations, as well as a compassionate voice for the culture of life and traditional values.

During Congressman Walberg’s 16 years in the state legislature, he never voted for a tax increase and successfully fought to reduce income taxes, property taxes, capital gains taxes and death taxes. He also compiled a 100% pro-life voting record and earned a lifetime A+ rating from the NRA.

Prior to his time in the Michigan House, Congressman Walberg served as a pastor for almost 10 years. Following his 16 years in the Michigan House, he served as president of the Warren Reuther Center for Education and Community Impact where his duties included creating local community betterment programs in the 7th District. Rep. Walberg also worked as a division manager for the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, before retiring in January 2006.

Tim and his wife Sue have been married for 33 years. They live in Tipton, Michigan, where they raised their three now-adult children Matthew, Heidi and Caleb.
